Social Science: Robocall Activity

BIG IDEA:
Robocall is automated phone call that uses both a computerized autodialer and a computer-delivered pre-recorded message.

It is used in telemarketing, politics, and for public service announcements or emergency information.

The laws in California states:

  • ·      Must have an existing relationship with the person

  • ·   Live person must come on first to tell you the nature of the call and the organization behind it

  • ·      Call must be disconnected immediately if the person hangs up or the message is done

INSTRUCTIONS:
1.  Review the Big Idea, Instructions, Roles, Rule of 3, and decide if you have questions.
2.  Take a look at the following websites and the examples.

Companies:

Examples:

3.  Review the profile of your opponent and the less than perfect information and your opponent and prepare a script.
4.  Review the less than perfect information about your candidate and prepare a positive phone call (and write the script) to get the voters to focus on the positives.
5.  Organize to present both and present both to the class and turn in the scripts.

ROLES:
Facilitator:   Keep the group focused on the purpose of the assignment, check for understanding regarding information about the candidate and their opponent, including the less than perfect part, and prepare them to answer questions about the information and the robocalls.

Harmonizer:  Get consensus on what to put in the robocall and keep group focused on outperforming the other groups

Resource Manager:  Does both robocalls address the biographies and the less than perfect issue?

Reporter:  Organize both robocalls for the presentation to the class and write in your notebook both scripts

RULE OF THREE:

  • ·      Does your robocalls address both issues and are in script format?

  • ·      Did you all participate in the presentation of the robocalls?

  • ·      Did you all play your roles as expected?

QUESTIONS: Facilitators see Purther

Campaign PBL: Profile Mailer

Big Idea:  The goal is to create a mailer to reinforce name and face recognition for your candidate (county board of supervisors or state legislator seat).

Instructions:
1.  Research what the elected position would do if they won (see a current county board of supervisor webpage or a state legislator).
2.  Make profile mailer on Microsoft Word (only choice).
3. Profile mailer should:
  • reinforce name/face recognition
  • Include a slogan
  • Photos of the candidate with his or her family or other people's families
  • Photos of the candidate in action (playing soccer with children, visiting a construction site, talking with business leaders etc)
  • Photos of the candidate with various ethnic groups
  • Testimonials from representatives of the target group
  • Endorsements
  • Brief review of the candidate's accomplishments or qualifications
4.  Some additional things:
  • Use the 1/3 rule
  • Only about 10% of the people actually open the mailer, so make the first and back page even better

5.  Who is your candidate?
  • JT Watts is Will Smith
  • Angelina Gonzalez is Angelina Jolie
*This is not homework.  It must be done during class time.  When is it due?  It depends on how much time I give you today.

Roles:

Facilitator:  Lead the activity keeping all focused on the Big Idea & Instructions
Harmonizer:  Get consensus on what will be put on the mailer and why
Resource Manager:   Get the group to discuss the visuals/text your group has put on the mailer
Reporter:  Prepare a share-out why you did what you did (be specific)

Rule of 3:
  • Mailer follows instructions
  • Group played roles effectively
  • Best work compared to competitors (1 v. 2 v. 3; 4 v. 5 v. 6 v. 7)
