Avocado High School: 2-Minute Meeting

Big Idea:

Should venture capitalist invest into Avocado High School?  Or is competition and the mite problem going to put us out of business?  We need to address the mite issue and show the need to expand production in order to convince the venture capitalist to invest.
  • Prior filmed lesson:  You ran into the venture capitalist in the elevator, discussed the 01-02 data, and arranged this meeting.
  • Course EQ:  What is most important to being a good citizen?
  • Challenge 4:  To foster the flow of useful and timely information
Instructions:

1. Review prior memo and data from 03 and 01-02.
2. Review the concepts we have covered since starting the Avocado PBL (see #s).  For example, take a look at theory of production, fixed and variable costs, law of supply, shift to the right and left, wheat market game, and supply and demand.
3.  Plan script (or storyboard) for discussing the data from 01-03 and include what you think are the important concepts we have covered.
  • 1 person in the group must play the venture capitalist, 1 must play the Avocado High representative and 1 must film.
4.  Using the iPad, film your plan.
5.  Edit your work.
6.  Upload to youtube by the end of hour
6.  Show your 2 minute meeting.

Roles:

Facilitator:  Director (responsible to make sure group follows the instructions)
Harmonizer: Producer (getting consensus)
Resource Manager:  Editor (making suggestions regarding the use of text and visuals and edits)
Reporter:  Camera (organizing the group with the plan)
*Anybody can film or be an actor

Rule of 3:
  • Playing the roles properly
  • Up to 2 minutes of filming persuading the venture capitalist to invest by discussing the data from 01-03, the mite problem, the competition, and the need to expand.
  • Showing understanding of supply and demand
Questions:

How long do you have?  I would like your work uploaded to youtube within the hour.   It is a four-block schedule.

Where do I write down the plan?  The reporter should write it in their notebook.

(1) Update on Parking

This is important information regarding parking, drop off and pick up of students and other community members.

Beginning next Wednesday, March 14, 2012 through July 20, 2012, access to Parking Lot K will be restricted to one entrance/exit for parking, drop off and pick up. Please see the map below and note that the single entrance (which will also serve as the exit) is to be accessed from Collins Street. Collins Street is the first right turn off University Drive.

The closure of the entrances and exits is due to further construction work that will occur during this time.

(2) Hunzeker/Marin Announcement

The management at Dennys and Vista appreciate their cooperation this week. They really appreciate iPoly students and their business,
but we have to establish a couple of rules.
They are welcome to go to Vista Store starting Monday, no more than 5 students at a time inside.
If they purchase a meal in Denny’s, they can sit in booths and tables to eat, but not if they are simply buying from Vista.
The dining area is for Denny’s customers.

The boycott: Hunzeker Announcement

Due to continued problems at the VISTA Café and Denny's Ms. Marin has agreed
to ask all iPoly students to stay out of this location for the entirety of
NEXT WEEK, Monday - Friday March 5-9th

This means before school, after school and in-between.   This means don't
"fake" the "I'm a College Student" look; this means don't sit outside of the
Café.

We are trying to prove that iPoly students are not the ones who are stealing
the extra soda, (ie reusing their cups for days on end or sharing one cup
for 10 students, etc), are not stealing from the store or the counter, are
not mouthing back to the managers or clerks at the counter.

One week away from the café should help them to see that we are not always
the culprits and one week of revenue missing from the café might help them
to find other alternatives for providing us services.

THANKS for BLOGGING THIS AND REMINDING STUDENTS OF OUR PLAN FOR NEXT WEEK.

Blog 18: The Product

Title: The Product
Label: Product
Due: By 8AM, Friday March 9th
Question: As of March, what is your product and why? Please provide evidence to support what you have done to lead you thinking this is your product. Be specific and use examples from your senior project (refer to what you are doing, for example, in my service learning, naming the where you work and who you work with, I have been..).

Product Definition: It is the most important outcome of your project. It is not "I learned.." It is the application of what you have learned. It doesn't have to be tangible.

How do you provide evidence? Evidence should come in the form of a photo, video, or something you link to the blog.

Examples of a product from 2011:
  • Achieving brown belt in Muay Thai
  • Improved shooting statistics (basketball)
  • Healthy approach to eating
  • Connection with players and coach at Mt. Sac
  • Improved cake decorating skills
  • Editorial calendar (see the calendar above Ogden's board)
  • Personal growth as a leader
