Rule of 4 Part III: 9th Annual Adopt-a-Family

As we began to organize for the 9th annual Adopt-A-Family, I wanted to thank you all for your effort so far.   Thanksgiving and Christmas are times of year for us to give back to the community to help folks who need the help in difficult economic times.

(1) Who are we helping?
  • family in La Puente
  • single mother with 3 children (14 year old girl, 12 year old boy, and 3 year old boy)
(2) How do we help?   Using the rule of 4, we all give $4 by December 7th.    You are welcome to give more and/or give whatever you can.  Talk to your parents over Thanksgiving.
(3) When we get all the money together (from 2012, 2013, iPoly faculty/staff, and maybe a few others), what do we do next?
  • Shop on December 7 & 8.
  • Wrap on December 9
  • Delivery December 10
(4) Can I go shopping with the group?  Yes, of course, see committee below and talk to them.  Can I go to deliver gifts on December 10th?  Yes!  But we are limited in how many people we can bring.

(5) Who do I talk to or give money to?
  • Senior ASB committee leaders are Karen & Jackie
  • Committee members (W: Andrea, Jazmin; N:  Elissa, Diana; S: Jessica, Alec; East:  Emanuel, Christa)
*This is not a house competition.   This is simply about helping a family in La Puente who could really use the help.   We are only keeping track of who is giving us what and how much because this is typical practice when running activities like this.  If your parents or a business you know wants to donate and wants the TAX ID # for their taxes, see Purther.

(6) Committee Members
  • Committee members:  What do we do?  Collect $4 from each senior in your house & encourage each junior to give $4 and collect their $.  Document who gives you what in both grade levels.
  • Go shopping with the team if you can
  • And help wrap

Can Drive Update

We have collected 1607 cans so far.   The final due date for can donations is Monday morning.    I delivered about 1000 cans today.  I emptied out 12N, 12W, & 11S.   We will make the final delivery on Tuesday.

If you are interested in helping giving out cans and other food, Sister Rose told me they hand out food daily but for this upcoming Thanksgiving they are doing it on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the:

Resurrection Catholic Church
3324 East Opal Street
Los Angeles, CA 90023

She noted they get thousands of people.    Sister Rose wanted helpers there at 10:15 or 10:30 AM.   See me if you are interested, I will give you the number to call Sister Rose.

Economic Systems

(Big Idea)

Nations are not one type of economic system.  They take characteristics that best fit their need. What is our need?  Legislators represent us and make those determinations.

Last class, we examined the basic differences between the two economic systems (Capitalism and Socialism).  Now you will look at the philosophers behind the system and what they say.

(Instructions)

1.  Read the biography of your economic philosopher as a group and develop a list of 10 literal (who, what, when where, and why) facts.

2.  Identify the strengths and concerns that this philosopher had with capitalism.  Explain what type of economic system (socialism, capitalism, communism) the economist would favor and why.  Support your opinion for both parts with the evidence from the reading.

3.  Determine how and why if your economist promotes each economic goal.  Support your opinion with evidence from the reading.

4.  Make the PowerPoint (not homework, we will finish during class time)

PowerPoint:
  • Slides:  Title, Introduction, Body and Conclusion
  • Thesis is question #2
  • 1/3 rule per slide
  • Use speaker notes (what you would say in the presentation

(Roles)

Facilitator: Lead discussion on your economist and check for understanding

Harmonizer:  Making sure all folks have an opportunity contribute & get consensus on group decisions

Research Manager:  Make sure the specific questions are answered with evidence from the reading

Reporter:  On computer facilitating the completion of the PowerPoint  Organize your group on how you plan to put together your PowerPoint presentation.  Don't just start working, make a plan.

(Rule of Three)
  • Play the roles effectively
  • Completion of the PowerPoint requirements
  • The speaker notes = your actual presentation (did you answer the questions)
(Questions)  Facilitator
